La Selva Reception on October 19
Hosted at an Olmsted Brothers-designed private estate near Planting Fields, this special reception is part of Planting Fields Foundation’s ongoing celebration of Olmsted 200. This event will kick off a two-day symposium featuring a keynote presentation by John Dixon Hunt, Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture at University of Pennsylvania, an expert on garden history and theory who has studied various cultural landscapes in Europe. Symposium: Situating the Residential Projects of the Olmsted Firm from October 20-21
Hosted at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay, New York, this major two-day symposium brings together experts in the fields of landscape architecture history and practice to examine the residential projects of the Olmsted firm, spanning from 1857 to 1979. Organized and hosted by Planting Fields Foundation, in conjunction with the National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP) and the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, this multi-day convening focuses on the impact of the Olmsted firm on residential landscape design, considering patronage, taste-making, and place-making for a private context; American landscapes and issues of race; methods of sustainability in the preservation and restoration of historic designed landscapes; and decision-making models for studying and sustaining historic design landscapes, among other topics.
Speakers include John Dixon Hunt, Laurie Olin, Charles Birnbaum, Arleyn Levee, Patricia O’Donnell, Witold Rybczynski, and Sara Zewde, as well as scholars selected from our Call for Papers, including Roger J. Crum, Mark R. Eischeid, Pamela Hartford, Jean-Luc Howell, and Christine O’Hara.
With a separate reception the evening before and public programming on the days following, this will be a week of scholarship, community, and programming that will celebrate the Olmsted legacy, new and significant scholarship, and the central contributions made by the Olmsted Brothers firm a century ago, which continue to shape Planting Fields today.

What’s Out There Weekend: Olmsted in Long Island on October 22 to 23
Planting Fields Foundation is proud to partner with The Cultural Landscape Foundation to bring you a weekend of exceptional Olmsted experiences. In addition to compiling a guidebook of Olmsted-designed sites on Long Island, this partnership also brings the opportunity to participate in private tours of the sites listed in the new publication. Tour sites include public parks such as Caumsett State Park, Bayard Cutting Arboretum, and Cold Spring Harbor Lab, as well as unprecedented access to privately owned Olmsted-designed sites including cemeteries, waterfront private estates, and other sites that are not usually accessible to the public. During these visits, site experts will give in-depth tours of each location.
