“Big Head Fred” gathers with fans at NAOP’s Olmsted Bicentennial Gala in Chicago, IL in June 2022.

Help us close the book on Olmsted 200! #CelebrateOlmsted with the National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP), the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, notable practitioners and authors, and Frederick Law Olmsted— we’re not kidding— at the Olmsted Pavilion on November 12 and 13.

The pavilion will be lined with panels from Frederick Law Olmsted: Landscapes for the Public Good, and segments from Olmsted 200’s popular Conversations with Olmsted series will play during break periods for those who need respite from the hustle and bustle of the conference.

Most exciting, “Big Head Fred” will be making appearances, eager to meet fans for photos and film. The 7-foot tall caricature was born from the combined talents of illustrator David Lee Csicsko and puppet and costume maker Randy Carfagno. Csicsko designed the original 2D illustration, and Carfagno adapted the drawing into one of his signature creations.

“Big Head Fred” first debuted in April at NAOP’s Olmsted Birthday Gala in Central Park, meeting familiar faces like ASLA Chief Executive Officer Torey Carter-Conneen, Olmsted guru Charles Beveridge, and celebrity guest Martha Stewart. Since April, the costume has visited Olmsted landscapes across the country. (See his recent stint in Riverside, IL, here).

Grab photos at the following times— and don’t miss your opportunity to win an Olmsted 200 Swag Bag just by sharing your “Big Head Fred” photos on social media. Tag us @Olmsted200 and using the hashtag #CelebrateOlmsted to win.
