The National Association of Olmsted Parks is pleased announce the winners of the Olmsted 200 Student Essay Competition.
To celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, NAOP encouraged students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels to submit essays addressing the question: How should the life, legacy and values of Frederick Law Olmsted inform 21st century challenges?
NAOP was pleased that the winning submissions connected the foundational principles of Olmsted’s democratic vision, values, and resilient designs to contemporary issues in American cities.
The winners include…
Secondary School Division:
First Prize—
Juliana Swartz, a junior at Needham High School in Needham, MA, finds that Olmsted offers “an unexpected guide to current crises” in her essay Frederick Law Olmsted: An Unexpected Guide to Current Crises.
College and Graduate School Division:
First Prize—
Julianna Marinelli, a junior at Boston College, outlines wisdom that Frederick Law Olmsted offers for 21stcentury challenges in her essay The Life, Legacy and Values of FLO: Wisdom for 21st Century Challenges.
Second Prize—
Andrew Herrara, a graduate student at Rutgers University, focuses on Olmsted’s visionary awareness of the public’s need for spaces to play in his essay Remembering Frederick Law Olmsted and the Public Need for Places to Play.
