To celebrate Frederick Law Olmsted’s 200th birthday, on April 22, 2022, Biltmore will unveil a collection of scenic stops throughout its historic gardens and grounds to help guests develop a deeper understanding of the impact of Olmsted’s accomplishments at Biltmore and appreciate the mature and preserved landscapes that he envisioned more than a century ago. These stops will feature engaging stories about Olmsted’s Biltmore project, allowing guests to better understand Olmsted as one of the primary designers of George Vanderbilt’s estate—and the national significance of Biltmore as one of Olmsted’s last great works. Stops will also be added along the Deer Park Trail behind Biltmore House, the location of some of Olmsted’s most signature design elements. From picturesque and pastoral areas to meadows, managed forests, and sweeping views, guests are encouraged to make time during their visit to explore the grounds while taking in the fascinating details about Olmsted, and contemplate the landscapes that he envisioned more than 125 years ago.
