Join the Olmsted Network on September 20-22, 2023, in Milwaukee, WI, for our annual conference. The conference will include tours of Olmsted landscapes in Milwaukee and Lake Geneva. We’re finalizing details now.

Olmsted is regularly associated with New York City and the East Coast, leaving his significant work in the Midwest underappreciated. The Olmsted Network is pleased to gather in Wisconsin to examine the rich Olmsted Heritage in Milwaukee and Lake Geneva.

In 2022, Wisconsin played a prominent role in Olmsted 200 by hosting museum exhibits, spirited community conversations, park tours, and birthday celebrations. In October, public officials dedicated the Olmsted Way, and a conversation is now underway to rethink the highway that divided Washington Park decades ago.

Join us in September as we grapple with these topics and more! We’ll place Olmsted’s work in a historical context, hear from officials on fiscal and other challenges, and examine ways park professionals and friends groups can responsibly adapt Olmsted historic landscapes to current needs.

In Lake Geneva, we’ll learn more about John Charles Olmsted, who designed the landscape surrounding Yerkes Observatory. This magnificent building is the birthplace of astrophysics and one of two places, we are told, Einstein sought to visit when he came to America. The other was also Olmsted-related: Niagara Falls!

Save the dates! More details and registration info are coming soon.
